Biomaterials Activate Human Immune System for Stronger Skin and Faster Healing

Scientists have recently formulated a microporous biomaterial that allows the skin to heal ten times faster. By activating the body's immune response, scientists were able to trigger regenerative wound healing in 10 human test subjects.

This biomaterial contains hydrogel scaffolds that trigger rapid tissue growth. This biomaterial has healed numerous skin injuries including second-degree burns, gashes, stomach ulcers, and other scarring wounds.

When there is a skin abrasion, scar tissue rapidly forms to reduce susceptibility to infection and disease. This hydrogel integrates into the wound. The beads within the gel form micro folds that support the cells at the site of the wound. As the wound heals the gel dissolves and leaves behind healed skin. Looking to the future, scientists aim to test this biomaterial on a greater array of human test cohorts. There are many unanswered questions such as how this biomaterial will affect people with eczema or acne. Or even how this biomaterial will affect babies. Nonetheless, the results from these preliminary human trials are very promising.
